Biography: Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa World Cup 2023 Runner Up Against Magnus Carlsen

Praggnanandhaa is a young Indian chess prodigy who has already achieved remarkable success in his career at such a young age. He was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on August 10th, 2005, and started playing chess at a very young age. (brief biography below)

His father, Rameshsbabu, an officer at TNSC BANK, and his mother, a homemaker, have been tremendously supportive of his passion for chess.

Praggnanandha’s early successes are a testament to his talent and dedication. He earned the title of FIDE Master after winning the World Youth Chess Championship Under-8 title in 2013. 

In 2016, he made history by becoming the youngest international master at the age of just 10 years, 10 months, and 19 days.

The young chess master continued to break records and achieve milestones in his career. He gained his first grandmaster norm at the World Junior Chess Championship in November 2017, finishing fourth with eight points. He gained his second norm at the Heraklion Fischer Memorial GM norm tournament in Greece on April 17th, 2018.

Praggnanandha’s accomplishments include winning the Under-10 title in 2015. He has since made history by defeating then-world champion Magnus Carlsen at the tender age of 16 on February 22nd, 2022. 

In the 2023 Chess World Cup, 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa became India’s youngest player to reach the Chess World Cup Final, securing the second place after a defeat to Carlsen.

He also defeated Carlsen 3 times in the FTX Crypto Cup 2022, finishing second behind Carlsen in the final standings.

Despite his youth, Praggnanandhaa has already established himself as one of the world’s top chess players and a rising star in the game. We can only imagine the heights he will reach and the records he will break in the future.
